Why Your Back Pain Isn't 'Just Part of the Job' – MSD Prevention for Rig Crews

Back pain on a drilling rig isn't inevitable. It's preventable. But it happens because proper musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) prevention isn't standard practice on most rig floors, even though it should be.

MSDs—injuries to muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves from overuse or strain—are a major occupational health issue in oil and gas operations. A 12-year study of Norway's offshore petroleum industry identified that MSDs were the most commonly reported category of work-related diseases, with more than 3000 new MSD cases reported over this time. A study of 172 workers in the natural gas industry showed that nearly 50% had musculoskeletal pain.

The cost of MSDs is significant. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, MSDs are responsible for almost 30% of all workers' compensation costs across all industries. These conditions have documented prevention strategies.

Field-Proven Prevention Techniques

Lifting during pipe handling and BOP operations. The standard matters here. Keep the load close to your body. Bend at the knees, not the waist. Engage your core before lifting. Don't twist while holding weight. If something is too heavy or awkward, use equipment—chains, straps, mechanical lifts. This isn't weakness; it's smart work.

Repetitive motion management. Tasks that repeat dozens of times per shift—wrench work, connection tightening, equipment checks—accumulate strain. Rotate crew members between tasks when possible. Give specific muscle groups recovery time. Take brief breaks to change position and reset posture.

Workstation setup. When working at a fixed location, height matters. Adjust work surfaces so you're not constantly bending down or reaching up. Position equipment so your arms stay within your natural range of motion. Small adjustments prevent hours of strain.

Proper tool use. The right tool used correctly reduces strain. A hammer that's too heavy or a wrench with the wrong grip creates unnecessary stress. Maintain and replace tools that are worn or damaged. Keep them organized so you're not reaching or searching.
